Individuals working in the field of art and design work to communicate their feelings and ideas through many different mediums on a daily basis. Some different materials uses include pastels, oils, tempera, clay, and plaster. Many different mediums include canvas, multimedia, photography, animation, etc. The main goal of most artists is to eventually have their art work hanging in museums, galleries, and people homes. Other individuals work for businesses, museums and curators, art director, and even professors of art. They can also specialize in many different areas such as sculpting, printmaking, cartoons, sketching, and medical illustration.

The more technical the job is in the art and design industry, the more of a degree the individuals is required to have. Individuals who are self employed and working with oils and pastels on canvas, may wish to only pursue an associates degree. Individuals who wish to be employed by advertising firms, become art directors, and go on to teach art will need to have degrees ranging from bachelors to their PhD. This all depends on the goals and the preference of the students. There are not any required certifications that students must achieve in the art and design industry in order to pursue their career. Typically, the individuals level of skill is demonstrated to future employers through their portfolio.

The job outlook for people involved in the art and design fields is moving at a very average pace. Individuals in this industry will be experiencing a great deal of competition for jobs in both the freelance and salaried fields. Since people are always on the lookout for new art talent, these individuals still have the chance of being discovered and having their artwork exposed to large groups of people.
